I may have got my knickers in just a tiny bit of a knot the other day... There was ranting and raving, but luckily I managed to keep it all on the
inside, and therefore my sweet and ever-put-upon family didn't have to endure it.
And also, just to mention before I launch into the reason for the hissy fit, I'm quite happy for people to have opinions that differ from my own. No, really. Just as long as said opinion can be kinda sorta justified, and has a clear and rational basis.
Anyway...
As you would be aware, Ms LaRue & I went to the movies the other day to watch the delightful
Music and Lyrics. And I loved it. I do have a slight Hugh Grant weakness, but nothing major... I just thought it was a sweet and giggle-worthy film. It hit the spot: the spot that needed bubbles and froth and pampering... We both walked out with the silly pop song in our heads and I actually think that's a Good Thing.
So the knicker-knotting happened because of the review in the SunHerald... It gave
M&L 5/10 and kinda wrote it off. Now, I don't think it was the most amazing movie ever, but y'know - it's a movie - it's make-believe - it's meant to be contrived... Why do I have to feel guilty and dumb because I happened to enjoy a bit of frippery? The SMH's review was altogether warmer, drawing parallels between Hugh and that other wonderfully silly and charming Grant: Cary, acknowledging that sometimes people just want to sit back, suspend disbelief, and enjoy the experience. They don't want to think, they don't want to question dominant paradigms... they want to munch on popcorn and laugh at the teenyboppers and hiss sarcastic comments at each other. Or at least I did.
Hey! I read books, literature even (!), I'm not a fan of Reality Teev, I'm even a dedicated visitor of museums... I'm part of the cultural bloody elite. And I have four kids and work fulltime. So back off! I'm gonna indulge in some light romcom action and all you naysayers can go suffocate yourselves in your black skivvies.
That said, I'll probably wait to watch
Notes on a Scandal and
Little Children on DVD. I'm having trouble watching anything even vaguely emotional on the big screen, and need to be able to stop the movie, get up, walk around, make a cup of tea, and re-settle myself again when watching anything with confrontation. It's a hangover associated with the whole Depression thing, but has been a hurdle for far too many years now, and it's really starting to bug me.
And... bugger. I've run out of steam so suddenly and I really need to go to sleep. A nasty combination of extreme back pain and cramps kept me awake most of last night, despite the 20mg of codeine I had taken. I ended up sobbing myself to sleep because the pain just wouldn't go away. And yes, I think it's time I went to see the doctor again.
