Singing the Bulli Blues
I'm having an issue with my local Council.
They suck.
Wollongong City Council, not happy with being hammered at the Land & Environment Court for their tres dodgy deal with Stockland over Sandon Point, have decided to give, yes that's GIVE some of a public soccer field to Stockland to create an access road bwtween the Feralness that is The Point development, and Thirroul. As you do. Just because EVERYONE else has to use the Highway/ Lawrence Hargrave Drive option, doesn't mean that the wankers who have bought into The Feralness that is The Point (TFTITP) have to. Oh no! They can just get our Council to GIVE them the land.
This would be the Council that levies rates for the residents of the Northern Illawarra that are greater than most of Sydney. Residents in Thirroul pay over $2000pa. Suburbs from Bulli north contribute over 60% of the income for the entire WCC area (which includes Dapto and the new Horsley Estate).
This would also be the Council tht is keen to allow The Village Building Company to redevelop the Bulli Brick Pits. They want to add over 600 residences on an old industrial site. With an up to 6 storey apartment complex. Doesn't matter that this entirely detracts from the heritage character of Bulli. Doesn't matter that this would be increasing the population of Bulli by over 23%, without ANY additional infrastructure. Doesn't matter that it is overwhelmingly opposed by the residents of Bulli. Doesn't matter that it flies in the face of the Council's own Escarpment Management Plan.
ARGH!

It's the way of it, unfortunately. No desierable place to live will stay the same forever - once it becomes desireable, the money comes, and money talks.

AND WCC have got rid of their public consultation groups. Because they didn't like being told we don't like what they're doing. So, no more public consultation. Pah!
AND I'm sick to the back teeth of the 'people have to live somewhere', lack of suitable housing etc etc...
Because the State Govt has designated Thirroul as a Hub, and are promoting medium-density housing there, despite strenuous local objection. They're not interested in creating jobs IN the Illawarra. Just further promting it as a dormitory for Sydney workers... All the new residential projects are advertised as 'only 70 minutes from Sydney *outside peak time' So. Yes, at 2am, it probably does take that long.

Most councils get away with this shit because the ratepaying morons are either busy answering SMH polls on The World Cup, or figure they're not going to still be in the area in 10 years, so what the fuck...
Have you considered taking the WCC to court, so that they might needlessly waste a good proportion of your rates on a first-class legal defence ??
Sadly, that's the reality of the exercise...
They spend money on the insane 'Street of the Week' scheme.
They took a hiding in the L&E court over the Stockland fiasco (destroyed industrial heritage, Aboriginal sacred sites etc)
But still - as you say, we're all too busy working to pay off our mortgages AND the horrendous rates levy to DO anything.
I particularly love the 'Bring Back Bulli' movement from a few years back. They want to secede from WCC and re-establish the old Bulli Shire Council. Hee!

There is a little reason called economies of scale that will account for you rates being higher than sid-an-eh
