A Well seasoned Bonfire (note grass growth)

This June Long Weekend we finally burnt the bonfire that has been seasoning at Mum & Dad's place down in Berry for the last 2 1/2 years. Yay! I love a bonfire - reminds me of Guy Fawkes Night in the UK, of guide camps, of Venturer camps, much fun is to be had at a bonfire...

And also food. There is always good food to be had at a bonfire. Maybe that smokeyness lingering in the air, gives everything a special yumminess quality...

Of course, it having poured down for the last week, made the bonfire a little hard to light. Nothing that a quantity of flammable liquid and a good bit of wafting couldn't fix. Maybe half an hour of Men Lighting Fire, then the fire was well alight, and giving off so much heat, you couldn't stand much less than three metres away.

NB: Photo of Man Wafting is NOT MrB, but a friend, known for his wafting prowess...
So we all stood around, slurping down broccoli soup, being mesmerised by the flames, worrying slightly about the possiblity of cranky just-woken-from-hibernation moderately singed snakes... until it started peeing down again. Then the bonfire's fair weather friends retreated to the Homestead for Scrabble in front of the open fire. MrB, the BiL and I stayed, the true friends of the Bonfire - it kept us dry, if we stood close enough. Or rather, it kept our fronts dry while our backs got wet and vice versa. But it was all good.
Thar she blows

Note to self: beer bottles do NOT melt in bonfires, no matter how hot you think they are. They shatter, leaving broken glass all over the paddock - provoking irritation from the Homesteader.

Oooh.

I like a good fire but I find the next-day smell of smoke a bit rough.

That last picture is lovely.

I LOVE that song!
It's one of those ones that are instant mood-lifters. Have to turn it up to 11 and get up and bop around etc.
Like Blondie's Tide is High.
Ta shroom, have now got it stuck in my head... doo doo doo doo etc.
