Archie-ing

Today I went Archibald viewing, terribly highbrow! Took the Big Girls, combined it with some Yum Cha, and made it our Holiday Outing. And seeing as it involved a train-ride, it was even better (as far as they were concerned...) Although we ended up standing all the way from Sutherland to the City. Silly actonb thought she'd be smart and drive up to Sutho - caught a Wollongong Express which turned out to be full. If we'd caught it from Thirroul we'd have had a seat!
Yum cha-ed with Chesty - poor thing has had 2 weeks now in which to contemplate why contraception is a Good Thing... Marigold, as ever, fantastic yum cha, although surprisingly stingy with the fluffy BBQ pork buns... Yum Cha is the best, and luckily I have children who are willing-ish to try new things - so scallop dumplings went down a treat. And green tea is so anti-oxidising that I'm sure it canceled out all the lard I ingested...
The Girls enjoyed the Archibald & Wynne prize exhibition, especially loved the picture of the sea - Chris Langlois Ocean (violet green) No.81 2006.
My fav. was the Catherine Abel Portrait of Julia Leigh. I tried to be a good, educationally-adept mother, talking to them about themes, and symbolism, and texture... They seemed to be enjoying my commentary until Harry turned to me and said "Can we stop doing this now?" "What, do you want to go?" "No, I just want to look at the pictures..." Hmmm, I think there's something in that for all of us...

The girls were gorgeous, actonb - but it's easy to say that when you don't have to take them home, I guess.

You forgot to mention that Harry then stopped in front of the next painting and asked what it meant.

I love Marigold! But probably my fave is East Ocean.

Haven't done East Ocean - where is it?
We were seriously ripped off in the BBQ pork bum department though...

Hey - we got them in the end, but it did mean we had to eat more than absolutely necessary to kill the time ...

Yeah, shroom. Where is East Ocean? Is it busy?

Yeh it is busy, and definitely better than Marigold (but marigold rocks as well - 2 floors of yum cha heaven). Its just up from the covent garden pub and up the stairs. As liz smiley says 'try it yasshhelf'.

F*ck the Chinese.
I suppose you lot were all watching 'The Biggest Loser; House Secrets', but there was an SBS doco on malaria last night.
Those f*cking four-footers had the cure for malaria 20 years ago and kept it to themselves...

Went to bed after GW, but damn - wish I'd seen the doco. Malaria kills more people than anything else doesn't it?
WTF are they doing with the cure?

Nah, it's all history now, but the savages had the cure back in the 70s/80s (Artemisinin) when the West's super-drug (Chloroquine) had been rendered virtually innefective by the bacteria's evolutionary resistance...

So what was the point? Intense smugness for the Chinese. A kind of 'I know something that you don't know' writ large...?

Might have been something to do with that pesky 'cold war', Dorothy...

Ooh, were they planning on using some deadly malaria strain in a biological weapon?
Stupid Cold War. I had forgotten about that. All this talk of terrorists under the bed...

No, they weren't going to use it as a biological weapon, Plankenstein.
They just weren't particularly keen to share their remedy with the filthy capitalist west in those days...
