All clear: Stand Down

Well Inigo is making a recovery - it looks like it was just an infection in his mouth. Probably some bird or small furry animal giving him hell from beyond the grave.

And serves himself right too.

So MrB has been giving him an antibiotic tablet every morning and evening, which provoked this conversation last night:
him: why do I have to do all the feral jobs?
me: because I gave birth to your four daughters...
him: but I had to put up with you while you were pregnant...

(cue guffaws from his father... cue withering looks from me and his mother)

later in conversation

him to his father (alluding to my exceptional talent for throwing up into plastic bags in a noiseless and dignified fashion while suffering morning sickness...) and how impressed were you with Actonb's chucking up in the freezer bag on the way to the airport that time...
me: ... and you need reminding why you have to do the feral jobs...?
him: oh. (silence, chastened expression)

Anyway, we have been informed by the vet that Inigo may need to have his teeth cleaned and descaled (huh? from eating too many skinks?), which all sounds well and good, except for the fact that it has to be done under general anaesthetic, and will cost up near $400. For a teeth-clean! So, if we don't get it done, does this make us the stingiest, evilest cat-parents in the whole entire world? Bloggers of the world, tell me it ain't so!

PHEW - glad he's on the mend.
BUGGER - about the $400. I think vets are all crooks!! Obviously I'm studying for the wrong profession.
Very hard call.
Is it a particularly life threatening thing this 'scale of tooth'??
Can you not feed the cat copious amounts of chicken bones to self-de-scale??????
There MUST be another way?????

It sounds to me like a vet scam, but I don't want to advise you incorrectly in case it really is serious and mr inigo could suffer long term consequenses. Google it!

The thought of spending $400 on cleaning a cat's teeth has me doubled up, AB: would the little bastard get a prosessional cleaning in the wild? Nope (you don't read about pussy vets in the bible, do you?).

Having said that, $180 is a ridiculous amount to pay for a cortisone shot so that a bee-stung beagle's face will stop swelling. Especially after the third bee-beagle encounter.

As they say, "Don't do as I do, do as I, er, say..."

possum - I know! I'm finding it very hard to believe that it would really cost that much. I like the idea of chicken bones...

KR - I'm planning on seeing how he goes with his anti-biotics, and leave the teeth-clean until absolutely necessary... But I may google it anyways...

mountjoy - I think it's ridiculous myself - Dad reckons I should just get in there with a toothbrush and save the $400.
But vets are the experts at guilt-tripping.
Ha! Is the beagle allergic? My neighbour's dog is allergic to grass!

We just spent over $1000 on getting two lumps removed from the family dog's side, and prepared ourselves for the worst. Turns out she just had two "fat lumps". Porky friggen dog.

I say pay it though. Peace of mind and all that.

OMel - heh. 'fat lumps' Is that like doggy-liposuction?

mex - how does one get a 7kg cat to chew sticks? He eats grass - does that count?

Actonb,

When our cat got hit by a car (and survived, amazingly) we paid $800 to have one of his incisors removed.

Our question to the vet was "what happens if we don't?" but the look on his face made us feel so guilty that we sent him back the next week.

Now he looks like a pirate whenever he yawns.

GW - when Inigo was hit by a car, his incisor just fell out... I think vets learn that look at vet school.
But we will end up doing it, we're suckers for the moochiness.
